Book Review - Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult
Finished reading this book long ago, but din't have to time to write my tots.. so am doing now.
It talks about a young Amish girl who is being charge for infanticide but she denies ever killing the baby. So the whole book revolves around how her lawyer, who happen to be her distant aunt, tries to helps her in wining the case. As usual there is always the suspense of in leading you find out whether did she really kill the baby or did someone else did or in fact the baby was stillborn.
The book gives the reader a look at Amish life. Amish pple are very devouted Christians and they lead very very simple life, because of that they are also known as Plain people. Thereby the pun in the the novel title i guess. These Amish pple, refuse to let technology come into their life except for those that they really needed to help them keep abreast in surviving. Hence you can imagine that their house do not have televisions, computer and Internet. There is basically no electricity in the house. They only use electricity (through generators) and machines in their farms. And they have one believe which I find very interesting. To an Amish, their aim is to blend into their own society. They are not to strike out as an individual, meaning no attention seeking acts and no individualism.
When I was reading this... sometime i just wish i was an Amish. Where pple are simpler... they do not play politics to gain fame or power... They are just one big group of pple, which is something missing in the society. How many times are we victims of politics? I have far too many personal experience on it. There is a scene in the book which writes how the whole Amish community get together to help someone build their own farm. The guys will do the work and the ladies will be preparing the meals. Its something tat simple that I'm actually envious. Will I ever be able to lead such simple life?
"Plain Truth" is my second book from Jodi Picoult. I prefer My Sister Keeper over Plain Truth. But its still a good book and I'm falling in love with Jodi Picoult's book, but they are hard to find in SG. I wonder if I will get to find them in BKK? hhahaa.. i must dreaming...

Book Review - The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
Finally I have finish reading the controversial book... my comment is if you are a devoted Christian then please give the book a miss. You probably won't even want to pick up the book in the first place.
When I first start reading the book, I tot I wouldn't be able to finish it. Cause Dan Brown give very vivid description of the meseum and churches. It was very dry and boring for somebody like me who prefer visuals. But I still went on reading cos I shouldn't give up so quickly on a bestseller. I'm sure there must be better things behind. And I was glad I did.
Putting the controversial topic aside, its a typical suspense novel which i always enjoyed. The description on the artwork of Leonard Da Vinci, the churches, meseum and even references to the bible, let me gain more knowledge. Which I really like. I love books tat are not just pure fiction. At least I learn something from the book apart from the main story. Which I think is one of the main purpose in reading.
Talking about the way Dan Brown write, he uses the method which alot of authors do. That is to introduce you to something and leave it unexplain / uncontinued until later part of the story. This will put you onto some thinking and at the sametime prompt u to continue reading to find out the answer. And to my surprise, he uses a lot of such methods throughout the whole book. It really kept me reading on to find out more.
But some parts of the book is a bit complicating. I have to flip back to try and recall what I have read and try to follow through. Besides, being a non-christian, I have a bit of trouble trying to remember the different meaning of the words like sangreal, chalice, etc in the beginning. And also like i mention earlier, he gave too descriptive information about the buildings and art work.
Well, as for the controversial part, i shan't make much comment. To me, this is just a novel. A novel means its a fiction. Like Dan Brown himself says at the prologue "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret ritual in this novel is accurate. Take note its only the description of the mention items. Its not his whole book, not the story behind the Grail he is suggesting. So if you are able to take that out, and is someone who loves suspense novel, I think you will enjoy the book.

(Take note of the words highlighted in red... so are you a 爛好人?)

Dr Wee Kim Wee - Death
Death is the leveller of all things - whether one is rich or poor, beautiful or ugly, famous or unknown, sucessful or failure in life, at death we are all equal.

Bobbie Yeung - Shine on You
